2024 YPN Summer Camps

Summer programs are held in person, at the TCMedia facilities. Registration is through Olympia Parks, Arts & Recreation & Lacey Parks & Recreation Department, and Tumwater Parks and Recreation. You do not have to be a resident of either city to register.

CAMPS FOR AGES 8-11

Animation Fun

Fee: $195

July 8-12, 9:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Discover various animation styles using iPads. Craft your animation story through Claymation, common objects, paper cut-outs, and digital 2-D drawings. Experiment with sound production, editing, and storytelling while employing various techniques to bring your animation to life. Drop-off is available starting at 9:15 a.m. Lunchtime supervision is available for those signed up for both morning and afternoon media camps during the same week. Please bring snacks, lunch, and a water bottle.

Breaking News: TV Studio Production  

July 8-12 , 2:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.                    

Engage in the production of video segments for a news magazine program in Thurston Community Media’s television production studio. Conduct research, write news stories, and use professional video equipment for shooting and editing. Collaborate with local media and journalism professionals throughout the week. Drop-off is available starting at 1:45 p.m. Lunchtime supervision is available for those signed up for both morning and afternoon media camps during the same week. Please bring snacks, lunch, and a water bottle..

Animation Overdrive

Fee: $325

June 24 - 28,  9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Explore the diverse world of animation, being introduced to various animation styles and experimenting with stop-motion, 2-D, and other forms. Animate common objects, puppets, and paper cut-outs while delving into sound production, editing, and storytelling. Culminate the experience by producing an animated short movie. Drop-off is available at 9:15 a.m. Bring lunch, snacks, and a water bottle.

Let's Make a Movie (this camp is 2 weeks)

Fee: $599

Mon-Friday July 22 - August 2nd, 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Embark on a dynamic two-week adventure immersing yourself in the art of filmmaking. This comprehensive camp guides students through the entire filmmaking process. 

Week 1: Pre-production and Script Development (July 22-26th, 2024)
Dive into the foundations of filmmaking by exploring scriptwriting, casting, and the technical aspects of shooting. Gain hands-on experience with cameras, audio equipment, lighting, and special effects. Collaborate with your team to craft and develop the script, cast your film, and rehearse it, setting the stage for the creative journey ahead.

Week 2: Filming and Editing (July 29th-August 2nd, 2024)
Build upon the skills acquired in Week 1, delving into advanced techniques in production and post-production for filmmaking. Further explore the intricacies of cameras, audio equipment, lighting, and special effects. Collaborate in teams to shoot and edit the scripts developed in Week 1, bringing your cinematic vision to life. 

By the end of this two-week camp, participants will possess a comprehensive understanding of the filmmaking process. They will have successfully navigated the pre-production, production, and post-production stages, resulting in the creation of original short movies. Drop-off is available at 9:15 a.m. Don't forget to bring lunch, snacks, and a water bottle. Join us for this unique and enriching movie-making experience!
